SW Youth Training Academy at SBSC

Just a quick post to let everyone know that the South West Youth Sailing Academy have approached SBSC requesting to visit the reservoir for a couple of weekends over the coming winter season. This has been agreed to and they will be joining us over the weekends of 10/11th Dec ’16 and 21/22 Jan. ’17.

These sessions form a part of their overall 6 month winter training programme which includes both initial sailing & race training at a variety of sea, river and reservoir venues.

They will be conducting a programme of structured training both on and off the water, using their own boats which comprise mainly RS Teras and Toppers.

There are a limited number of places available for cadet sailors from SBSC to join this training programme whilst they are at our reservoir. If you know of any SBSC cadet sailor who would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please let me know before December 6th (Tuesday week), either directly or via the email group.

SBSC Instructors 2016

New Instructors

Great commitment and sailing talent from some of our younger club members has resulted in five of them becoming RYA Dinghy Instructors.

Having been initially identified by Mark Talbot as potential instructors they have spent time as Assistant Instructors teaching youngsters on our summer courses and following intensive training over three weekends run by Pete Muskett and Jen Miller, both Coach Assessors with the RYA, they have now gained their full qualification.

SBSC Instructors 2016
They are :- Kelsey Green, Lewis Perry, Sam Barnes-Thornton, Annie and Sophie Talbot.

I would like to congratulate them for their achievement, Mark for his support, encouragement and guidance and David Thomson as our RYA Club Principal.

Full proceedings from the AGM held on Wednesday 9 November will be reported in the next newsletter, however, the report from our outgoing Commodore, Andy Roxburgh, gives a very good overview of club activities and achievements over the year… We trumped the opposition in the home leg of the Banbury Chaser and the Triangle Cup […]

AGM 2016 Review

RNLI Open – Howards Way

We were all expecting a strongish northerly breeze with a start – and most of the course – down the Halstock leg. In the event we had a fitful westerly with lots of holes and a few gusts. The original course included a short dog leg from 6 back up to 5 before going down towards 3, partly to avoid the shallows off this point. In the event this was changed to leave out 5 and apologies to those who missed this change of course. Sixteen boats entered and after just under an hour for the leading boats, the results were Continue Reading

Club Championships 2016

The Sutton Bingham Sailing Club 2016 Club Championship took place over the weekends of 2nd and 9th October. Originally scheduled for Sunday the 2nd, the complete absence of wind after the first race lead to postponement of the 2nd and third races to the following Sunday.

Last year, Rob Dyer was crowned Champion after turning up for the two afternoon races which he won outright. This year Rob has won the cup yet again but this time had a bit more work to do.

Fun Day Report

It’s not all serious sailboat racing at Sutton Bingham. This Sunday (18 September) the Sailing Committee organised a series of 4 fun races. There was still an element of competitiveness, but also a good deal of craziness with everyone, beginner to experienced yachter, having the chance to come away with a prize.

The day kicked off with Chris’s Terrific Tera Team Race. Sailors were paired into adult and junior crews to race in the club’s fleet of junior Tera dinghies. A Le Mans style start was adopted, with a twist, as sailors made the 50 metre dash to boats moored on the pontoons “three-legged” to add to the mayhem. Once aboard the teams sailed out to deposit one of their crew on moored rescue boats out on the lake, before racing around a small course. Crews then swapped to enable their partner to sail the course before they paired up again to sail back to shore. There was a bit of skullduggery involved with a lot of splashing, boat hooks used to try to delay dinghies getting away from the rescue boats and a some paddling towards the end. Chris Jones and Lucy Hodge emerged winners of the contest with close runners-up Tim Robertson and Dotty Hodge. Continue Reading

SUTTON BINGHAM FINDS ITSELF AT CENTRE OF HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTER

A Somerset sailing club has found itself at the centre of Hollywood blockbuster Swallows and Amazons after teaching one of its stars to take to the water.

Sutton Bingham Sailing Club was approached to teach Yeovil teenager Dane Hughes, who plays John Walker in the upcoming big screen adaptation, the art of yachting.

The film required actors who were able to combine the skills of delivering lines with faultlessly manoeuvring dinghies.

Producer Nick Barton originally wanted children who could already sail, but when this approach failed, young actors were cast and taught to sail instead.

Sutton Bingham was approached to teach Dane last summer, and guided him through a crucial sailing qualification – while keeping the big screen link secret.

Mike Burke presents Swallows & Amazons lead actor, Dane Hughes with his RYA Level 1 certificate

A spokesman for Sutton Bingham Sailing Club said: “Dane joined the training course and successfully completed an adult RYA level 1 course under the instruction of senior instructor Mike Burke assisted by assistant instructor Sam Barnes.

“The training was conducted in one of the club’s Comet Trio dinghies with the content especially adapted to concentrate on boat handling skills and manoeuvring the boat to be expected during filming.

“Dane picked up the skills quickly and passed the level 1 award with flying colours.”

The film is screening this week at Cineworld Yeovil.
