Rogers Race Winner

RNLI Open & Roger’s Race

On Sunday 4 November Sutton Bingham Sailing Club held a special open event in memory of Roger Battersby who sadly passed away last summer, together with their annual fundraiser for the RNLI.

Roger was a long time member of the sailing club and a passionate dinghy racer in a variety dinghy classes. The event was supported by 16 local sailors who competed in a multi-class handicap race in the morning for the Roger’s Race Trophy donated to the club by the Battersby family. In the light breezes Howard Freer excelled to win the race in his Streaker dinghy from Ian Jay sailing a Finn and Chris Bottomley in his D-Zero. Maggie, Rogers former partner presented the trophy along with club commodore, Phil Bailey.

In the afternoon the annual RNLI shield was competed for with a pursuit race in which the slowest boat started at 1.30pm, pursued at timed intervals by the faster classes of boat. Brother and sister Dylan and Dotty Hodge in an RS Feva, followed by Simon Dyke in his Topper Topaz and then a fleet of Laser Radials. At the finish, however, it was Richard Frost in his Solo dinghy that had worked his way to the front with the Streakers of Andy Roxborough and Howard Freer finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

RNLI Open 2018

Following each race trophies were presented to the winners together with vouchers to be spent at the RNLI Pop-Up Christmas Shop staffed by local fundraisers. In total £335 was raised for the RNLI. It was a most enjoyable day of competitive sailing raising money for an extremely worthy cause.

Next years event will be held on Sunday 3rd November.

Training Centre closing down for the year

After another great season of sailing, we are now closed until next year.  We will be publishing our Youth and Adult course dates and other sailing opportunities to coincide with the membership renewal applications that go out after Christmas.

We hope that all of you who sailed with us in 2018 will rejoin next year to get as much out of your membership as possible.

Get Afloat Day

The Get Afloat Day scheduled for Saturday, 6th October has been CANCELLED.  This is partly because of continuing concerns over the water level at the reservoir after this long hot – and dry – summer.  Much as we have enjoyed this long spell of weather, we now need lots of rain.

Adult sailing courses

That’s it for this year with a huge thank you to all our Instructors and all of you who booked on Courses.

We’ve had another really successful season but I’m afraid you will have to wait until next year to Learn how to Sail – or improve your sailing skills – at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club.  This website will be updated early next year with the course dates and all the information you need about the courses and how to book.  Everyone who completed a course is now a member and you should have received our new Membership Pack containing a Welcome letter, a copy of the latest Club Newsletter, a car park sticker and membership card..  We hope you will rejoin next year for lots more sailing.

Youth summer holiday courses

We’ve had amazing support again this year from all you parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles, but that’s it for this year.  No more Youth Courses and the fortnightly Youth Group has finished – back to school !

If you’ve been unlucky this summer, we will be doing the same next year, and this website will be updated after Christmas with the new dates.  Having completed one of our courses, your children are now members of the Club and are entitled to hire boats and enjoy the facilities at the Club.  We hope you will rejoin next year so they can continue sailing and improve their skills.

Site Update

As you may be aware just by visting the site, it has a bit of a facelift. This was due to some of the functionality not working. However you may also notice that the events menu is not working properly at this time. Please bear with me while I get it fixed.
