The next RYA Youth course – YSS 92 – over Half Term,

Wednesday, 29th May to Friday, 31st May is now FULL.

There are still vacancies on all our summer courses.

The first Adult RYA course is due to start on Saturday, 4th May.  It continues on Sunday, 5th May and then the second weekend is 18th and 19th May.

This course is for beginners or improvers and there are currently vacancies.  Go to the ‘Learn to Sail – Adults’ section of this Website for all the information about how to book.

The Half Term Youth course – YSS 92 between Wednesday, 29th and Friday, 31st May – is now full but we do currently have vacancies on all the summer courses.

Now’s your chance !  Sutton Bingham is a great place to learn and the Club’s RYA Training Centre has published the dates of this year’s courses for youngsters and adults.  Just go to the Learn to Sail section of this website and you’ll find all the information you need.

Come and learn all about sail making, sail trim and care of your sails with the experts from Moatt Sails. 7pm for 7.30pm start at SBSC Clubhouse. £5 per head to include chilli and jacket potato. To book email Richard Frost. Prepayment is required to secure your place – either at the sailing club on Sunday or by making arrangements with Richard to pay online. Please confirm your attendance as soon as possible before Tuesday 26 February.

Also make a note in your diary for future “Armchair Sailing” events before Thursday evening racing gets underway:

14th March – Racing Rules – improve your understanding of the rules that govern our sport. Catering arrangements to be confirmed.

28th March – Race Management – everything you need to know to run a race without drama! This event will be held at The Red House with food.

The 2019 Icicle Open, which is the 5th event of the Southwest Sailing Tour, takes place on Saturday 26th January. Entry is online and open now. Go to the event page – http://www.suttonbinghamsc.net/w/event/icicle-open/

On Sunday 4 November Sutton Bingham Sailing Club held a special open event in memory of Roger Battersby who sadly passed away last summer, together with their annual fundraiser for the RNLI.

Roger was a long time member of the sailing club and a passionate dinghy racer in a variety dinghy classes. The event was supported by 16 local sailors who competed in a multi-class handicap race in the morning for the Roger’s Race Trophy donated to the club by the Battersby family. In the light breezes Howard Freer excelled to win the race in his Streaker dinghy from Ian Jay sailing a Finn and Chris Bottomley in his D-Zero. Maggie, Rogers former partner presented the trophy along with club commodore, Phil Bailey.

In the afternoon the annual RNLI shield was competed for with a pursuit race in which the slowest boat started at 1.30pm, pursued at timed intervals by the faster classes of boat. Brother and sister Dylan and Dotty Hodge in an RS Feva, followed by Simon Dyke in his Topper Topaz and then a fleet of Laser Radials. At the finish, however, it was Richard Frost in his Solo dinghy that had worked his way to the front with the Streakers of Andy Roxborough and Howard Freer finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Following each race trophies were presented to the winners together with vouchers to be spent at the RNLI Pop-Up Christmas Shop staffed by local fundraisers. In total £335 was raised for the RNLI. It was a most enjoyable day of competitive sailing raising money for an extremely worthy cause.
